Infant of Prague Home and School Association Meeting Minutes February 17, 2009 In attendance: Jackie Reinhart Shannon O’Shaughnessy Danica McLeod Jenn Schiller Anne Dyke Kailee Norris Nancie Callaghan Dorian Leaman Nicki Moore Angie Willburn Elizabeth Swagel Tara Viscuso Fay Yaniero Carol Connelly Joe Luna Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by Jackie Reinhart at 6:30 p.m. Opening Prayer: Prayer was offered by Danica McLeod. Treasurer’s Report/Scrip: Jenn provided everyone with a register’s report and an allocation of funds report. It has been asked what split means on the register report. Split means there has been a deposit made from different areas. However, it is still categorized. We’d like to keep pushing scrip. A survey was sent home a while back and we received 25 of those back. Jenn will consolidate the results from the survey and put together a report. We will see if Mrs. Pappas will post these on the website. Mrs. Leaman asked why Target is not a participating store. Target has their own program through their card. Mrs. Marks stated we need to market Scrip to the Parish. The Dioceses and the Finance Council wants us to push this. It needs to be more visible. She suggested setting up a table on Sundays after mass and selling our top sellers. Jenn mentioned we have a parishioner who is passing the word on at St. Christopher in Snead’s Ferry. Danica questioned how much we make from Food Lion and if it is worth carrying. Jenn said Food Lion is a separate order and it can be seen on the report. It was suggested to have certain scrip cards available to purchase in the office. We need to advertise this. Allocation of Funds: Jackie pointed out that the conclusion and breakdown of the $8200 can be seen on the form that was provided. She stated we promised to provide this information and it has been spent as follows: *Computers to replace the non-working in the lab - $4,703.64 for Mr. Hamamoto *D’Nealian letters for the school - $1,391.00 *Portable overhead projector - $374.49 *Heartstart Defibrillator - $2,027.65 Total Expense: $8,496.78
$1,052.00 from the catalog sales was made from internet sales. Internet orders are sent directly to the homes. Mrs. Marks said she doesn’t think families are aware that they can still order and the school will make a profit. This should be posted on our website. Danica said we have sent home flyers but she will get the word out. Movie Night: Jackie mentioned pre-order forms were sent home but you can certainly decide at the last minute if you’d like to join us. Night at the Museum will be shown in the Parish Hall Friday night at 7 p.m. There will be popcorn and soda. The kids can wear their pajamas. Please pass the word. Jacket Sales: Danica stated there have been lots of requests for the nylon green IOP jackets. She has found a company that will offer us a deal if we order bulk. This company is associated with an IOP family who has belonged to the parish for 25 years. This will be a one time a year sale. Order forms will be coming home next week. The prices are as follows: Kids Jacket – $22.00 Adults Jacket - $27.00 Baseball Caps - $13.00 Kid Combo - $35.00 (cap and jacket) Adult Combo - $37.00 (cap and jacket) Claudia McIlhenny asked if we will order extra so we can sell them at a later date. Danica said we will try but if we do order extra we’d like these to go to incoming students and families. Claudia also mentioned it would be nice to have these available to purchase at Open House. Nancie Callaghan asked if you pay when your order. The answer was yes. Kailee Norris asked if the jacket sales are a fundraiser. The answer was yes. Walk-a-Thon – Debbie McLean is our chair. The wheels are in motion and she is very excited and has a plan. We will divide the students into three groups with three different shifts for lunch. Jackie continued to explain the plan which includes allowing the kids to walk 32 laps. Hopefully this will help with the congestion and running issues. Danica stated it will be more fun having them in different groups b/c the students will be with their own age group and it will be less chaotic. This also gives the parents more opportunity to volunteer rather than committing to the whole day. She stated that smaller groups are more manageable. Danica asked everyone to give this plan a chance and if it does not work out we can always change it back to the way it has been run in the past. Jackie said the four charities we are considering donating the walk-a-thon money to include St. Jude, Hope for Warriors, Ronald McDonald House, and Shriners.. The list will go home to the parents and we will vote. Angie Willburn questioned why we are splitting up the students because this is a time when the school comes together. Dorian Leaman asked if we can vote on the process of how the walk-a-thon will run. Danica answered with no because on the 27th the walk-a-thon committee is being formed. Nicki Moore stated this used to be a day of fun rather than 20 minutes of fun. Our recess is 20 minutes. She also questioned if the students have to stop at 32 laps. Anne Dyke asked if the buddy classes could walk together. Danica said the students do not have to stop at 32 laps and if we let the buddy classes walk together it ruins the purpose of splitting the groups according to age. Anne Dyke stated the walk-a-thon is part of camaraderie and togetherness. She understood this to be a school wide activity. It seems we are losing another faith filled event. Nancie Callaghan stated by breaking the students into groups may require more volunteers. Danica felt more parents are more apt to volunteer if they did not feel it is a full day commitment. Jackie said she did not foresee this being a touchy subject. If you feel strongly about this, please write your concerns and give them to her. Jackie will meet with Debbie and will take your concerns to heart. Nothing is ever set in stone. These concerns will be shared with the committee. Change is hard. Debbie has run several walk-a-thons. She tried to look at this objectively and tweak it to make it better. Angie stated that there are not a lot of opportunities that we can all get together. As professionals we can handle the issues that were problems in the past and solve them. Danica disagreed and said there are so many children and so few volunteers. You can’t eye everybody. It is not about breaking up. It is about providing a more age appropriate environment. Give it a chance. Let’s throw our support to Debbie and give it an opportunity to be successful. Anne Dyke said she has a problem with splitting the school into groups b/c not only is she a teacher here but she has four kids attending this school. She’d like to be a part of this with everyone. Jackie again requested everyone to write down their concerns and she will take them to Debbie and the committee. Our goal is to reach $10,000 and the whole school be awarded if we reach this goal. Board Nominations: Nomination slips were provided and will also be given to the parents. All positions are open for the 2009-2010 school year. Claudia McIlhenny said she thought the commitment was an automatic two years. Jackie stated this is suggested or recommended but is not required. Iowa Test Scores: Mrs. Marks provided the following information. The percentages represent the National Percentage Ranking. 2nd grade 69% 3rd grade 82% 4th grade 74% 5th grade 81% 6th grade 68% 7th grade 83% 8th grade 73% Our school takes the Iowa test in October while most of the schools take the Iowa in May. We take this as a pre-test so we can understand class movement and to help meet individual needs. You can set goals and growth. Mrs. Marks stated she’d like for us to have an end of the year test. This would cost $9.00 per child. She’d like to see if HSA could cover this cost. Closing Prayer: Prayer was offered by Father Tom.
